In the face of rising fascism and authoritarianism around the world, it is more important than ever to understand the threats to democracy and to develop strategies for resisting them.

In his new book, Winning the War for Democracy, Dr. David Frum offers a clear-eyed analysis of the rise of fascism and provides a blueprint for resisting its spread.

Frum argues that fascism is not a new phenomenon, but rather a recurring threat to democracy that has taken many forms throughout history.

In the 20th century, fascism emerged in Europe as a response to the economic and social upheavals of the Great Depression.

Today, fascism is re-emerging in new forms, fueled by economic inequality, social media, and the spread of disinformation.

Frum identifies five key elements of fascism:

  • A charismatic leader who exploits fear and resentment to gain power.
  • A mass movement that is organized around a single ideology.
  • The use of violence and intimidation to suppress dissent.
  • The control of the media and the education system.
  • A rejection of liberal values such as democracy, human rights, and the rule of law.

Frum argues that these elements are present in many of the far-right movements that are gaining ground around the world today.

In the United States, for example, Donald Trump has used fear and resentment to gain power, and he has encouraged his supporters to use violence against his opponents.

In Europe, far-right parties have made significant gains in recent elections, and they have called for the suppression of dissent and the rejection of liberal values.

Frum warns that if we do not take action to resist the rise of fascism, it could lead to the collapse of democracy and the loss of our freedoms.

He offers a blueprint for resisting fascism that includes the following elements:

  • Educating ourselves about the dangers of fascism.
  • Supporting democratic institutions and values.
  • Speaking out against hate speech and violence.
  • Organizing to defend our rights.
  • Voting for candidates who support democracy and human rights.

Frum concludes by saying that "the war for democracy is not a spectator sport." It is a fight that we must all be prepared to wage.

Winning the War for Democracy is a timely and essential book that offers a clear-eyed analysis of the rise of fascism and provides a blueprint for resisting its spread.

This book is a must-read for anyone who cares about the future of democracy.
