In 2020, voters in North Carolina stopped the GOP from taking over the state's courts. This was a major victory for democracy, as the GOP has been working for years to stack the courts with conservative judges who would overturn Roe v. Wade, gut the Voting Rights Act, and dismantle other progressive policies.

The GOP's plan to take over the courts was simple: they would gerrymander the state's judicial districts to give themselves an advantage in elections. In 2018, they passed a law that created two new Supreme Court districts that were heavily Republican. They also drew the lines for the Court of Appeals districts in a way that gave Republicans a 2-1 advantage.

But the GOP's plan backfired. In 2020, Democratic voters turned out in record numbers and elected two Democratic justices to the Supreme Court and three Democratic judges to the Court of Appeals. This gave Democrats a majority on both courts, and it stopped the GOP from taking over the judicial branch.

The victory in North Carolina was a major setback for the GOP's nationwide effort to take over the courts. It showed that voters are willing to stand up for democracy and protect their rights. It also showed that the GOP's gerrymandering tactics can be defeated.

The victory in North Carolina is a model for how voters can stop the GOP from taking over the courts in other states. By voting for Democratic candidates, volunteering for campaigns, and donating to organizations that support democracy, voters can protect their rights and ensure that the courts remain fair and impartial.

How You Can Help

Here are some ways you can help stop the GOP from taking over the courts:

  • Vote for Democratic candidates in judicial elections.
  • Volunteer for Democratic campaigns.
  • Donate to organizations that support democracy.
  • Spread the word about the importance of voting in judicial elections.

By taking these actions, you can help protect democracy and ensure that the courts remain fair and impartial.
