Friedrich Schiller was one of the most important figures of the German Enlightenment. He was a poet, playwright, philosopher, and historian. He is best known for his plays and poems, which are characterized by their passion, idealism, and love of freedom.

Schiller was born in 1759 in Marbach, Germany. He studied law at the University of Tübingen, but he soon abandoned this career to pursue his literary ambitions. In 1781, he published his first play, "The Robbers," which was a critical and commercial success. This was followed by a series of other successful plays, including "Don Carlos" (1787),"Wallenstein" (1799),and "Mary Stuart" (1800).

Schiller's plays were often banned by the authorities because of their political content. He was a strong advocate for freedom and democracy, and he believed that the arts could play a role in bringing about social change. In 1794, he was appointed professor of history at the University of Jena. He held this position until his death in 1805.

Schiller's work has had a profound influence on German literature and thought. He is considered one of the greatest German poets, and his plays are still performed today. He has also been a major influence on European philosophy and history.

This volume of "Friedrich Schiller: Poet of Freedom" is the third in a three-volume biography of Schiller. It covers the years 1794-1805, which were some of the most productive and successful years of his life. The book is written by Thomas Carlyle, a Scottish essayist and historian who was a great admirer of Schiller. Carlyle's biography is a classic work of scholarship, and it provides a fascinating insight into the life and work of one of the most important figures of the German Enlightenment.

If you are interested in German literature, philosophy, or history, then I highly recommend reading this book. It is a well-written and informative account of the life and work of one of the most important thinkers of the Western world.
