About the Author

John Kiriakou is a former CIA officer and whistleblower. He spent 14 years with the CIA, working as an intelligence officer and a counterterrorism specialist. Kiriakou was one of the first CIA officers to interrogate Abu Zubaydah, a high-ranking al-Qaeda operative.

In 2007, Kiriakou was charged with leaking classified information to a journalist. He was convicted and sentenced to 30 months in prison. Kiriakou was released from prison in 2012.

Since his release from prison, Kiriakou has been a vocal critic of the CIA and the U.S. government's use of torture. He has written several books about his experiences, including The Reluctant Spy and Torture Machine: Inside the CIA's Secret War on Terror.
