In this wide-ranging and ambitious book, Jason Powell offers a comprehensive genealogy of antihumanism, from its origins in the Renaissance to its contemporary manifestations. Powell argues that antihumanism is not a monolithic phenomenon, but rather a complex and multifaceted tradition of thought that has taken many different forms over the centuries.

Powell begins his analysis with John Milton's Paradise Lost, which he argues is one of the earliest and most influential examples of antihumanist thought. Powell shows how Milton's poem depicts humanity as fallen and corrupt, and how it rejects the humanist ideal of human perfectibility. Milton's antihumanism is not simply a rejection of human nature, however, but also a critique of the social and political structures that have been built on the foundation of humanism. Powell argues that Milton's antihumanism is a radical call for a new society, one that is based on equality and justice rather than on the exploitation and oppression of the many by the few.

Powell then traces the development of antihumanist thought through the work of William Blake, Friedrich Nietzsche, Martin Heidegger, Michel Foucault, Jacques Derrida, Gilles Deleuze, and Félix Guattari. He shows how each of these thinkers has developed their own unique version of antihumanism, but how they all share a common commitment to critiquing the humanist tradition and its assumptions about human nature.

Powell's book is a major contribution to the study of antihumanism. It is a work of immense scholarship and erudition, but it is also written in a clear and engaging style. Powell's analysis is nuanced and sophisticated, and he does not shy away from the complexities and contradictions of antihumanist thought. This book is essential reading for anyone interested in the history of ideas, and it will be of great value to scholars of literature, philosophy, and political theory.
