The Taiwan Strait

The Taiwan Strait separates the island of Taiwan from mainland China. China claims Taiwan as its own territory, but Taiwan considers itself an independent nation. Tensions have been high since the end of the Chinese Civil War in 1949, and China has repeatedly threatened to use force to reunify Taiwan with the mainland. The United States has pledged to defend Taiwan if it is attacked, raising the risk of a conflict between the two superpowers.

The Korean Peninsula

The Korean Peninsula is divided into two countries: North Korea and South Korea. North Korea is a totalitarian state with a nuclear weapons program, while South Korea is a developed democracy. Tensions between the two Koreas have been high since the Korean War ended in 1953, and North Korea has repeatedly threatened to attack South Korea. The United States has a large military presence in South Korea, and any conflict between the two Koreas would likely involve the United States as well.

China has been building military bases in the South China Sea, and its neighbors fear that China is seeking to control the entire region. The United States has been conducting freedom of navigation operations in the South China Sea, challenging China's claims.
