Birgit Nilsson: A Life in Music
Birgit Nilsson was born in Västra Karup, Sweden, on May 17, 1918. She began singing at an early age and studied at the Royal Swedish Academy of Music in Stockholm. After graduating, she made her professional debut in 1946 at the Royal Opera House in Stockholm. Nilsson quickly rose to international fame for her powerful voice and dramatic intensity. She performed at the world's leading opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Royal Opera House in London, and the Vienna State Opera.
Nilsson was particularly renowned for her interpretations of Wagnerian roles, such as Isolde, Brünnhilde, and Elektra. Her voice was perfectly suited to Wagner's demanding vocal lines, and she brought a rare combination of power and sensitivity to her performances. Nilsson also excelled in Italian opera, particularly the roles of Aida, Tosca, and Turandot. She was known for her fearless stage presence and her ability to project her voice over a large orchestra.
