Interflug was born on September 1, 1958, as the official airline of the German Democratic Republic (GDR). It emerged as a successor to the defunct Deutsche Lufthansa, which had operated in pre-war Germany. The airline's initial fleet consisted of Soviet-built Ilyushin Il-14 and Lisunov Li-2 aircraft.

In its early years, Interflug primarily served domestic routes within the GDR. However, it soon expanded its network to include destinations across Eastern Europe, including Moscow, Warsaw, and Prague. The airline also established connections to Western Europe, with flights to London, Paris, and Amsterdam.

The 1960s and 1970s marked a period of rapid growth and modernization for Interflug. The airline acquired jet aircraft, including the Tupolev Tu-134 and Tu-154, which significantly reduced travel times and expanded its reach.

During this golden age, Interflug established partnerships with major Western airlines, such as Lufthansa and Air France. It also introduced a range of amenities and services to enhance passenger comfort and safety, solidifying its reputation as a reliable and efficient air carrier.

Interflug operated during a time of intense Cold War tensions. As a state-owned airline, it was closely intertwined with the political and economic policies of the GDR. The airline's flights often served as conduits for diplomatic missions and cultural exchanges.

Despite its political significance, Interflug maintained a high level of professionalism and service. Its pilots and cabin crew were highly trained and dedicated to providing safe and comfortable travel experiences. The airline also played a crucial role in promoting tourism and trade between the GDR and other countries.

The fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and the subsequent reunification of Germany in 1990 marked a transformative chapter for Interflug. The airline faced intense competition from established Western carriers and struggled to adapt to the new economic landscape.

In 1991, Interflug officially ceased operations. Its assets were acquired by Lufthansa, which integrated portions of its network and aircraft into its own fleet. Despite its closure, Interflug remains a symbol of the GDR's aviation history and the vibrant world of travel during the Cold War era.
