The Bosnian War was one of the most brutal conflicts in Europe since World War II. It began in 1992 when Bosnia and Herzegovina declared independence from Yugoslavia. The Serbian-led Yugoslav People's Army (JNA) responded by launching a campaign of ethnic cleansing against the Bosniak (Muslim) population. The war lasted for four years and claimed the lives of over 100,000 people.

Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, was one of the hardest-hit cities in the war. It was besieged by the JNA for nearly four years. During that time, the city was subjected to relentless shelling and sniper fire. The people of Sarajevo endured unimaginable hardships, but they never gave up hope.

Hearts Grown Brutal is an in-depth and moving account of the Bosnian War from the perspective of those who lived through it. The book is based on interviews with over 100 survivors of the siege of Sarajevo. These interviews provide a firsthand account of the horrors of war and the resilience of the human spirit.

The book is divided into three parts. The first part tells the story of the outbreak of the war and the siege of Sarajevo. The second part focuses on the experiences of individual survivors. The third part examines the long-term effects of the war on the people of Sarajevo.

Hearts Grown Brutal is a powerful and important book. It is a testament to the human cost of war and the resilience of the human spirit. The book is a must-read for anyone interested in this conflict or the human cost of war.
