Haidt and Lukianoff show how this trend has been amplified by social media and the 24-hour news cycle. They argue that these platforms create a feedback loop that encourages people to constantly seek out and share content that confirms their existing beliefs, while making it easy for them to avoid content that challenges those beliefs.
This feedback loop can lead to a spiral of outrage, in which people become increasingly offended by even the slightest perceived insult to their religious beliefs. This can make it difficult to have constructive conversations about religion, and it can lead to violence and discrimination against religious minorities.
Haidt and Lukianoff offer a number of recommendations for how to combat the manufacture of religious offense. They call for more education about the importance of free speech, more tolerance for different viewpoints, and a more critical approach to the consumption of media.
The Manufacture of Religious Offense is a timely and important book. It provides a much-needed analysis of a growing problem, and it offers a number of concrete steps that we can take to address it.
